Kelsey Chmiel, Laurie Henes Garner USTFCCCA Regional Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - NC State women's cross country runner Kelsey Chmiel and head coach Laurie Henes have received regional annual awards, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Chmiel was honored as Southeast Region Athlete of the Year for the first time in her career while Henes was named Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth-straight season.
Chmiel honors come on the heels of a season in which she never finished lower than sixth place in any meet. The junior was the first finisher across the line in five of NC State's six meets in 2021 and became the third ACC Champion from NC State in as many years with her first-place finish at the meet. She additionally placed first at the NCAA Southeast Regional, marking the second-straight regional meet where the individual champion has been a member of the Wolfpack.
The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native tabbed All-ACC, All-Region and All-America honors in 2021. She became the sixth runner in NC State history to garner at least three cross country All-American accolades in her career with the 2021 laurels.
Henes coached the Wolfpack women to the first NCAA team title in program history in 2021, additionally guiding the squad to its sixth consecutive ACC Championship and fifth-straight Southeast Regional title. All five members of NC State's scorers at the NCAA Championships garnered All-America honors under the guidance of Henes, setting a program record for the most All-Americans in a single season.
With six All-Region and All-ACC honorees, Henes' Wolfpack tied the most in a single season in both categories.
