TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – NC State women's soccer's 2021 season came to a close on Friday afternoon as it fell to national seed No. 7 Pepperdine (17-3-1), 3-0, in the NCAA Second Round at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Wolfpack finished the season with a 9-9-2 record, as it reached the NCAA Second Round for the fifth consecutive fall season and finished with a .500 record or better for the fifth-straight year.
Friday's matchup with the Waves was NC State's 12th one this season against a team that is ranked or receiving votes for the top 25, including its sixth against a top 10 opponent.
Despite controlling possession for a majority of the match at 55 percent, an early goal combined with a pair of scores in the second half allowed Pepperdine to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Waves attacked early with a goal in the second minute by Calista Reyes from close range, as Tori Waldeck played to her from the right side and her low strike found the bottom right corner of the net.
Pepperdine managed to tack on two more goals in the second half by Carlee Giammona and Joelle Anderson in the 67th and 71st minutes, respectively. Giammona was played a through ball from the midfield and won the 1v1 with goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, while Anderson's chip shot from the top of the box curled into the left side of the net.
Echezarreta matched her career high in saves for the third time this year with eight. She finished the season top three among all freshmen in NC State women's soccer history with a 1.07 goals-against average (3rd), 76 saves (3rd) and 5.5 shutouts (2nd).
