Defensive Coordinator Gibson Candidate for Broyles Award
11/16/2021 9:27:00 AM | Football
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Tony Gibson is one of 59 candidates for the 2021 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches. The nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division I programs across the country.
Â
Under Gibson's guidance, the NC State defense has ranked among the best in the country throughout the season, despite losing multiple starters – and two of his three starting linebackers - to season-ending injuries.Â
Â
Only 13 FBS schools have allowed fewer points that a staunch Pack defense has given up this season. NC State currently ranks second in the ACC and ranks 14th in the FBS in scoring defense, allowing just 18.9 ppg. The Wolfpack has given up less than 15 points in five games this season (six if you count Clemson's 14 points in regulation before the Pack won in double OT) and nine of the Wolfpack's 10 opponents this season scored less than their season average in all of their other games - some significantly less.
Â
The Pack leads the ACC and ranks fifth in the FBS in third down conversion defense this season. The opposition has converted on just 46 of 155 attempts (30%).
Â
NC State has improved its defensive rankings dramatically since last year, despite losing LBs Isaiah Moore and Payton Wilson – the top returning players in the nation for stops at or behind the line of scrimmage last year.
Â
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
