ATHENS, Ga. – NC State's divers opened the 2021 calendar year with action at the Georgia Diving Invitational Sunday through Tuesday. The squad competed on the one-meter and three-meter springboards over the course of the meet and also saw its first action on platform this season.
Bayne Bennett returns to Raleigh with a pair of Zones cuts, as he posted a score of 347.95 on three-meter and 310.55 on one-meter. He tallied both of those scores in the finals, placing second and third, respectively, in those events.
Freshmen Mary O'Neill, Clara Tate and Matt Sexton all made their platform debuts as members of the Pack. Sophomore Patrick O'Brien competed in all three events with a season-best score on one-meter, and Katelyn Cook added her highest score of the season in that event as well.
"Considering this our first big meet of the year, I think the divers did well," said Yahya Radman. "It was an opportunity to see where their training has gotten them. After the second day, a fire was lit underneath them, and they are coming back with a hunger to improve and add some new things as we lead into the second half of the season. I'm very happy to see that three of our divers made it into the Bulldog Shootout, and we lasted into the second and third rounds, with Mary O'Neill, Bayne Bennett and Patrick O'Brien. It was also a lot of fun to watch some of our freshmen shine and really put their mark on this team. The future is very bright for NC State and this diving program as we continue to progress toward NCAAs and the excitement of March."
