Ranking ties NC State's best preseason mark in program history
TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second season in a row, the NC State women's tennis team will start its dual match campaign in the national top 10 as it checked in at No. 8 in the Oracle ITA Division I Preseason Team Rankings.
That number ties as the best preseason ranking for the program after it was also ranked eighth to start the year last season.
The Wolfpack is no stranger to the top 10, as it spent the entirety of the shortened 2020 season ranked eighth or higher. After its appearance at ITA National Team Indoor Championships in early February of 2020, the team was a fixture in the national top five, and the Pack soared as high as a program-best No. 3 during dual match play.
Though the 2020 dual match campaign ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pack was off to its best start in program history for the second year in a row with an 18-3 record. Five of the squad's victories were over top-25 opponents, including a historic upset over No. 3 Georgia for the Wolfpack's highest-ranked win in program history.
NC State returns seven players from that 2019-20 team, including ITA All-America honorees Anna Rogers and Alana Smith. Letterwinners Adriana Reami, Jaeda Daniel, Lexi Keberle, Lana Mavor and Liz Norman also return, and the program welcomes freshmen Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki to round out a solid squad.
In addition to the team rankings, NC State starts the year with four players featured in the individual rankings. The Pack boasts two top-20 doubles pairs - Rogers/Smith (No. 2) and Adriana Reami/Jaeda Daniel (No. 16) - and three top-40 singles players - Smith (No. 23), Rogers (No. 35) and Reami (No. 38).
NC State continues individual action this weekend as it competes at the UNC Invitational before officially stepping into dual match play. The remainder of NC State's 2021 slate will be released at a later date.
