
Pack Falls in First Road Contest of Season

The Hokies (1-0) jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter, outgaining the Wolfpack (1-1) by a total of 166-36 in the opening 15 minutes.

NC State got on the scoreboard in the second quarter as Ricky Person, Jr. rushed it in from three yards out to make it 17-7.

After an injury to starting QB Braxton Burmeister, the Hokies put together back-to-back TD drives before the Pack capped the first half scoring with a 53-yard Christopher Dunn field goal to make it 31-10 at the break.

Virginia Tech added a pair of field goals in the third quarter, before QB Devin Leary came off the bench to lead a TD drive, capped by his 7-yd TD pass to C.J. Riley, to make it 37-17 going into the fourth.

A Hokie fourth quarter TD was answered by NC State's Jordan Houston scoring from one-yard out for the final score of the game.

After Thayer Thomas returned a Hokie punt 21 yards to the VT 49-yard line, the pack ran seven straight rushes for the Pack's first score of the day. Zonovan Knight had the first 31 yards on four carries, followed by Person with three rushes for 18 yards including his three-yard score.

Seeing his first action of the season, QB Devin Leary marched the Pack down the field 75 yards in eight plays for a third quarter TD. On the drive, Leary was 4-of-5 for 60 yards. Riley caught his first pass of the season, and his first TD since 2018.

• As the first half expired, PK Christopher Dunn booted a career long 53-yard field goal. That is tied for the fourth longest kick in school history, and the longest since John Deraney had a 54-yard FG in 2006. The field goal was Dunn's 13th consecutive dating back to last season.
