RALEIGH - The NC State women's tennis team found unprecedented success in the classroom this past spring. The squad posted the highest semester GPA among all Wolfpack teams with a 3.83 mark. That number is also the highest ever among any sport in NC State's history since the department began tracking in the fall of 2008.
"Well, I have to say that this really came as quite a surprise," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "All credit to every member of the team, as they kept applying themselves to what they could after the stoppage (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) on March 12. I'm extremely proud of their efforts on and off the court and the mentality with which our girls have handled this transition. In some ways, these results show the balancing act that student-athletes have to manage, playing a high-level sport at the same time as managing their course load at an academically-rigorous institution. At the same time, with all things being equal, our student-athletes exceed at an extremely high level in the classroom, and I'm sure this was seen across all of our sports at NC State this spring."
Seven players on the roster were named to the Dean's List for this most recent term after earning semester averages of 3.5 or better. In addition, Dylan Cannon and Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe turned in perfect 4.0 semester GPAs.
The NC State women's tennis team also enjoyed its share of success on the court this season. Though the 2020 dual match campaign was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pack was off to its best start in program history for the second year in a row with an 18-3 record. Five of the squad's victories were over top-25 opponents, including a historic upset over No. 3 Georgia for the Wolfpack's highest-ranked win in program history.
NC State never wavered outside of the top 10 during the 2020 season. After its appearance at ITA National Team Indoor Championships in early February, the team was a fixture in the national top five, and the Pack soared as high as a program-best No. 3 during dual match play.
Anna Rogers and Alana Smith were named ITA All-Americans for the second season in a row after becoming the program's first All-Americans in 2018-19.
