RALEIGH - NC State baseball's Patrick Bailey heard his name called on Wednesday night in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft, as he was selected as the 13th overall pick to the San Francisco Giants.
Â
Bailey becomes the 10th Wolfpack player selected in the first round of the MLB Draft (total includes secondary phase). This also marks the first time in program history that the Wolfpack has had first round picks in back-to-back years, as Will Wilson was selected 15th overall to the Los Angeles Angels in the 2019 MLB Draft.Â
Â
In his 24 seasons at the helm of the Pack, head coach Elliott Avent has had 111 players selected in the MLB Draft, including four top 15 picks.
Â
Before his final season with the Pack was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bailey earned 16 starts behind the plate in the 17 games he played in, batting .296 with a team-leading six home runs and 20 runs batted in. He finished second on the team with 20 runs scored and a .685 slugging percentage, and ranked top four in the ACC in RBIs, home runs and walks (17).
Â
The Greensboro, N.C. native hit three grand slams in the 2020 campaign, which all came in an 11-day span. On Feb. 28 against Iowa at the CambriaCollegeClassic in Minneapolis, he homered from both sides of the plate for the second time in his career, remaining the only player in program history to do so in a single game.
Â
Additionally, Bailey reached base safely in the first 15 games of the season and turned in five multi-hit and five multi-RBI games.
