RALEIGH – The NC State women's cross country, women's golf, gymnastics, women's swimming and diving, women's track and field and volleyball teams earned a Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for academic excellence, as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
The six teams marks the most for the Wolfpack in a single year. The previous department-best mark was five teams set in 2013-14.
This is the ninth consecutive year that the women's golf program has been recognized for its academic success, which is the longest streak for any NC State program. The Pack earned four top-10 team finishes and five top-20 individual finishes before the 2019-20 season ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The women's swimming and diving program has been awarded the honor three years in a row, and it most recently won the Chancellor's Cup for having the highest team GPA of any women's team at NC State. The Pack placed second at the ACC Championship, marking its fifth-straight team podium finish, and 13 members of the team qualified to compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships before the halt of the season.
The Wolfpack gymnastics team concluded its season ranked No. 23 nationally in the Road to Nationals rankings and earned a share of the 2020 EAGL Regular Season Championship. The squad collected multiple postseason honors, including EAGL Gymnast of the Year (Lauren Kent) and EAGL Head Coach of the Year (Kim Landrus).
The women's cross country team was honored after winning its fourth-straight ACC and NCAA Southeast Region team titles during the 2019 campaign. The team went on to place fifth at the NCAA Championships for its third top-five finish in the last five seasons.
In track and field, the Wolfpack women's team saw five members earn All-ACC honors at the 2020 ACC Indoor Championship. Michelle Cobb and Kelsey Chmiel qualified for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships before the season came to a close.
This marks the first Public Recognition Award for the volleyball team. The Wolfpack led the ACC in total digs during the 2019 season, and junior Melissa Evans became the third player in program history to earn three All-ACC honors.
The Public Recognition Awards are given annually to teams with an Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19.
