BLACKSBURG, VA. - The No. 7 NC State men's tennis team got its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win of the season on Saturday, defeating Virginia Tech 4-2. NC State improves to 11-4 (1-1 ACC) on the season while Virginia Tech moves to 5-6 (0-3 ACC).
The Wolfpack claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. No. 18 Tadas Babelis and Yannai Barkai were victorious over Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro, 6-3, for the first win of the match. Alexis Galarneau and Robert Turzak followed that win with a 6-4 win over Ryan Kros and Matthis Ross to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Virginia Tech got a win first with No. 47 Mitch Harper's 7-6(4), 6-1 win over No. 92 Babelis. However, the Wolfpack was quick to get the next two victories on singles to put the team one away from clinching.
No. 20 Galarneau defeated No. 112 Korsgaard 6-4, 6-3, and moments later Rocens was victorious over Bernstine in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
The Hokies got another win on court three with Ribeiro's 6-4, 6-4 win over Rafa Izquierdo Luque. Barkai ultimately sealed the win for NC State, defeating Carlo Donato 7-6(6), 6-3.
HEAR FROM THE PACK: HEAD COACH KYLE SPENCER
"Great job from the boys today. It was a tough fight, and we knew it would be. In doubles we were impressive, taking care of business. The man of the match today was Yannai Barkai, coming through. I'm proud of this team. It was a very difficult environment to come into with not much practice beforehand, but the guys got it done. Excited to have a couple of days off and then get ready for more ACC matches with Boston College and Wake Forest along with UNCG.
"The ACC is such a gauntlet, so it feels good to get our first win in the conference this year. Pack Risin'!"
