No. 9 Wolfpack Defeats No. 4 Texas, NC A&T in Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. - The 9th-ranked NC State men's tennis team took on fourth-ranked Texas and NC A&T on Sunday in a doubleheader at Cary Tennis Park, defeating the No. 4 Longhorns in a 4-3 decision and getting the 4-0 win over the Aggies. The Wolfpack's win over Texas was its first over an opponent in the top five since at least 1999.
NC State improves to 10-3 on the season with the wins while Texas falls to 10-3 and NC A&T moves to 1-7.

In doubles action against Texas, play was tight across all three courts. NC State ultimately was able to claim the point with a win on court two by Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Collin Shick, 6-4, over Jacob Bullard and Eliot Spizzirri. A few minutes later, the pair of Alexis Galarneau and Robin Catry defeated Chih Chi Huang and Cleeve Harper in a 6-4 decision to seal the point for the Wolfpack.
Texas got on the board in singles play with No. 6 Christian Sigsgaard's 6-1, 6-2 win over 96th-ranked Tadas Babelis, and Spizzirri followed that win with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Izquierdo Luque.
Despite dropping the first set on five courts, third sets took place on four courts. Freshman Martins Rocens got the Wolfpack its first singles win of the day with 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Harper, but Texas' No. 45 Siem Woldeab put the Longhorns a match away from clinching with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Yannai Barkai.
Catry was victorious over Huang on court six 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to even the team score.
The match came down to court one, where No. 37 Galarneau and No. 2 Ito were locked into a three-set battle. Each won a tiebreaker, but in the end it was Galarneau who achieved a 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-1 win to clinch the victory for the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack did not drop a set in doubles play against the Aggies. Rocens and redshirt-sophomore Joseph Schrader got the 6-0 win over Nolan Martino and Jessie Simpson and were followed soon after by Galarneau and Catry's 6-0 win over Nicolas Arduh and Vasil Ivanov.
In singles, Rocens got his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jorge Goenaga and Schrader defeated Simpson 6-1, 6-0 to put NC State one match away from clinching.
No. 96 Babelis clinched the match for NC State with a 7-6(6), 6-1 win over Arduh.
