Gymnastics Posts Season-High Beam Score at Quad Meet

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The NC State gymnastics team placed second in a quad-meet at Penn State with Cornell and Towson on Saturday, posting a 195.850. Host Penn State recorded a season-high 196.575, Cornell recorded a 190.750 and Towson notched a 193.750.
NC State began the meet on bars, and freshman Emily Shepard led off with a 9.825. Sophomore Meredith Robinson also posted a 9.825 in the event, as did juniors Katie Cox and Lauren Kent and senior Melissa Brooker. Brooker's score tied her season high in the event.
Shepard, Robinson, Cox, Kent and Brooker tied for third place on bars. As a team the Wolfpack recorded a 49.125, marking the third consecutive meet that the squad has achieved a 49.000 or higher on the rotation.
The Wolfpack's second rotation of the day was beam, and the team compiled a season-high 49.250. Alexis Beucler began the rotation for NC State with a 9.825. Kent bested her career-high score with a 9.875 and tied for third place while junior Kasey Nelson and freshman Chloe Negrete tied their career bests in the event. Nelson recorded a 9.850, a season-high score for the Marietta, Ga. native, and Negrete tabbed a 9.925 in addition to a first-place finish. Sophomore Kailin Foland additionally tied her career-high in the event.
On floor, Shepard posted a 9.800 while Beucler notched a 9.850. Beucler's score was good to make her part of a tie for third place. Senior Drew Grantham achieved a 9.900 and a second-place finish, and the score marks the fifth consecutive meet in which she has had a 9.900 or higher in the event.
The Wolfpack posted a 49.075 on the rotation, continuing its streak of 49.000 or higher scores on the event. NC State did not post lower than a 49.050 on floor in the month of February.
The final event of the meet for NC State was vault, and the Wolfpack tabbed a 48.400. Shepard and Negrete posted the highest scores in the rotation as Shepard notched a 9.800 and Negrete recorded a 9.750.
Shepard made her all-around debut, notching a 39.150 and a second-place finish while Kent posted a 39.000 all-around score and finished in third place.

"This week we placed great emphasis on our landings, and today it showed," said head coach Kim Landrus. "We always talk about transferring practice to competition and the team responded.
"Going 49+ on three events is indicative of our progress. Next weekend we have another opportunity at home. Our focus will be to build off what we did today and prepare for championship season."
