Korstanje Wins 50 Free on Second Day at #ACCSD Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State men's swimming team found one conference crown and totaled three podium finishes on the second day of the ACC Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Nyls Korstanje earned his first individual ACC Championship of his young career on Thursday evening with a 19.25 clip in the finals, out-touching Louisville's Abdelrahman Sameh (19.31).
NC State has now won five of the last six 50-yard freestyle conference titles.
Erge Gezmis brought home the first podium finish of the night in the 200-yard individual medley, as he the junior clocked in at 1:43.19, dropping eight seconds off his previous season-best time entering the meet. His finals time ranks third in school history.
The 200-yard freestyle relay completed the podium trifecta with a 1:17.70 clip. Korstanje (19.19), Noah Henderson (19.65), Mark McGlaughlin (19.33) and Noah Hensley (19.53) represented the Pack.
Through two days of competition, NC State leads the conference with 488 points, followed by Virginia (438 pts.) and Florida State (420.5 pts.).
500 FREE:
The Pack placed six swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle final, including two in the A final. Ross Dant and Eric Knowles clocked in at 4:14.57 and 4:15.26 respectively for the fastest NC State times of the season at the time in the prelims.
All six Pack members posted NCAA B cuts in the prelims.
In the finals, Dant and Knowles earned top-five finishes in 4:13.77 and 4:15.70, respectively. Dant's performance was the fastest by a Pack member this season and the third-fastest in program history.
Zach Brown (4:18.03), Curtis Wiltsey (4:19.61), Danny Erlenmeyer (4:19.23) and Gil Kiesler (4:23.75) rounded out scoring for the Pack.
200 IM:
Gezmis was the lone A finalist representing the Pack in the 200-yard individual medley and found his way on the podium with a 1:43.19 mark.
Noah Bowers also contributed points to the team board with a 1:46.35 performance, good for 18th place.
50 FREE:
NC State was led by Korstanje's 19.07 clip in the prelims, the fastest mark of any swimmer on Thursday morning. He followed up that performance with a gold medal as the only NC State athlete in the A Final.
The B and C Finalists were Henderson – 19.69, McGlaughlin – 19.76, Luke Sobolewski – 19.77 and Hunter Tapp – 19.83. They collected three top-16 finishes in the finals (Henderson - 19.72, McGlaughlin - 19.74, Sobolewski – 19.78, Tapp – 19.90).
