GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State men's swimming team opened competition at the ACC Championship on Wednesday with an ACC title in the 200-yard medley relay and a second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The squad posted NCAA A cuts in both events.
The 200-yard medley relay squad recorded NC State's fastest time of the season (1:24.13) and a top-five time nationally on its way to a gold medal in the ACC Championship's opening event on Wednesday afternoon. The victory came after a disqualification by Louisville that bumped the Pack into first place.
Coleman Stewart (20.83), Rafal Kusto (24.30), Luke Sobolewski (20.38) and Nyls Korstanje (18.62) collected the first-place honors. Stewart's 20.83 clip in the backstroke leg registers as the second-fastest time in the nation.
The NC State men have now won six of the last seven 200-yard medley relay conference titles.
The men continued their podium stand with silver-medal honors in the 800-yard freestyle relay in the second and final event of the night, finishing in 6:14.98. Eric Knowles (1:34.01), Stewart (1:33.06), Hunter Tapp (1:34.33) and Noah Hensley (1:33.58) found the wall second to Louisville (6:12.02).
Knowles' 1:34.01 mark to open the relay ties for the team's fastest 200-yard freestyle time of the season (Tapp).
