INDIANAPOLIS – NC State rifle freshman Makenzie Sheffield was named as one of nine individual qualifiers to the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships. Sheffield will compete in the air rifle event at the 2020 Championships in Lexington, Ky. on March 14.
With Sheffield representing the Wolfpack, it marks the fourth time in the last five years NC State has been represented at the National Championship. Sheffield is joined Ohio State's Ariel Hall, UT Martin's Kaitlin Korinek and Army's Kaitlyn Kutz as the air rifle individual qualifiers.
"We are so excited to have Makenzie representing the Wolfpack at the NCAA Championships," said head coach Emily Holsopple. She has worked so hard this year and progressed tremendously to earn her spot on the big stage. It is a huge accomplishment, especially from a freshman. We look forward to the match and know its only the beginning for her and the program."
Sheffield averaged a 585 in air rifle this season and posted a team-best 592 at the NCAA Qualifier last weekend, just one mark shy of her career-high, 593. Sheffield is one of only two freshman included in the individual field, and the only one competing in air rifle.
