RALEIGH – The fourth-ranked NC State women's basketball team (22-2, 11-2 ACC) dropped just its second game of the 2019-20 season on Thursday evening, falling 66-59 to ninth-ranked Louisville on Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
The decision marked the Wolfpack's first home loss of the year and its first time in 16 games that it fell short inside Reynolds Coliseum, a streak that started on Feb. 21, 2019.
After shooting just 25 percent (8-of-32) from the field in the first half, NC State stared up at its biggest halftime deficit of the season, a 10-point (33-23) Louisville lead. The Pack trailed by as many as 13 (38-25) in the early stages of the third quarter but held the Cardinals to just 3-of-11 shooting in the final 6:18 of the period. In that same span, NC State knocked down four baskets in a row on its way to cutting its deficit to six points (46-40) headed into the fourth quarter.
The Wolfpack pulled within three points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, courtsey of three-pointers by Cunane and Jakia Brown-Turner, but Louisville's defense buckled down once again. Those threes were the only two to go down out of 11 shots taken by NC State from 9:30 to 2:03. Louisville rebuilt a double-digit lead of as many as 12 points late in the fourth period on its way to taking home the win.
Wolfpack junior Kayla Jones set a new career high in scoring with 17 points in an 8-of-14 shooting performance. Jada Boyd and Elissa Cunane joined her in double figures with 10 apiece.
Three Cardinals scored in double figures, led by Jazmine Jones' 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Louisville's leading scorer on the season Dana Evans added 14 points, and Kylee Shook notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven blocked shots.
