Wolfpack Leads After Day One of Janis Hape Dowd Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C - NC State's swimmers began action at the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational hosted by North Carolina on Thursday. The men's 375.5 points and the women's 370.5 points are both in the lead over Duke, UNC and Virginia Tech after the first day of competition.
RELAY HIGHLIGHTS:
The Wolfpack women kicked off action at the finals with an NCAA A cut time in the 200 freestyle relay, with the first-place team of Victoria Fonville (22.54), Kylee Alons (21.31), Sirena Rowe (21.48) and Heather Maccausland (21.67) finishing in 1:27.00. The group completed the race over two seconds before the second-place squad. The team landed in the record book with the third-best time in program history, and the mark is the best in the nation.
The men were victorious in the 200-yard freestyle relay as well as Noah Henderson (19.92), Hunter Tapp (19.19), Luke Sobolewski (19.41) and Luke Miller (19.56) clocked the seventh-best time in the country (1:18.08).
In the 400-yard medley relay, Katharine Berkoff, Olivia Calegan, Abby Arens and Alons posted the second NCAA A cut of the night for the Wolfpack with a time of 3:29.46, the second-best time in the country.
The Wolfpack men's 400-yard medley relay of John Healy, Jack Moranetz, Sobolewski and Tapp tabbed a first-place finish as well with a time of 3:08.37 that ranks seventh-best nationally.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Kate Moore bettered her second-place school time in the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries with an NCAA B cut time of 4:37.94. Her time was good for third in the country, and she out-swam the preliminaries field by almost 8 seconds. In the finals she claimed first place (4:38.10), while Yara Hierath posted her own NCAA B cut (4:45.60).
Alons improved her school record in the 100=yard butterfly in the preliminaries (51.52) and took home first place in the finals (51.56). Both Alons and Arens (52.25) posted NCAA B cuts and times that rank in the top 10 nationally in the preliminaries. Arens took second in the finals with a time of 52.53. On the men's side, Sobolewski tabbed a B cut time of 46.20. His time was good for ninth-best in program history.
Eric Knowles (4:14.07), Ross Dant (4:14.59) and James Plage (4:19.43) each finished in the top four of the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in first, second and fourth, respectively. All three posted NCAA B cuts in both the preliminaries and finals, with Dant posting a 4:14.04 and Plage tabbing a 4:18.33 in the preliminaries. Knowles and Dant each clocked times in the top 10 nationally, and Plage earned a spot in the school record book with his preliminaries time.
In the women's 200-yard IM, only the Pack was on the podium, but it was Julia Poole who claimed the win. Her preliminaries time of 1:56.19 is good for ninth-best in the country, and her finals mark of 1:56.34 got her the victory. Emma Muzzy (1:57.97) improved her preliminary time by just over a second to post a B cut mark for second place. Maccausland also swam well enough to earn a B cut, recording a 1:58.63 and earning a third-place finish.
Freshman Luke Miller swam his way into the record book in the 200-yard IM preliminaries, swimming a 1:45.86 for the 10th-best time in school history. In the finals, Miller posted a fourth-place finish (1:46.18). Michael Moore posted a podium finish in the event, taking third place (1:46.15).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Rowe (22.37) and Fonville (22.51) earned the top two finishes with Rowe finishing first. Both members of the Pack's times were good for NCAA B cuts, with Fonville swimming a 22.35 in the preliminaries. Henderson earned a B cut on the men's side, swimming a 19.82.
