Billikens ended the game on a 32-14 run
ST. LOUIS – A shorthanded NC State men's basketball team faltered late on Thursday evening at Saint Louis as the Billikens shot 58.6 percent in the second half to pull away for an 80-69 win at Chaifetz Arena.
With the win, Saint Louis improves to 6-0 while NC State falls to 3-1.
Sophomore Manny Bates had a career-game for the Pack, finishing with a career-high 20 points and a career-high eight blocked shots. He had six blocks in the first half as the Pack held a Saint Louis team that entered the evening ninth in the NCAA in shooting percentage to just 31 percent from the field.
Senior guard Devon Daniels added 15 points and Braxton Beverly finished with 13 points, all in the second half. Jericole Hellems, playing in his hometown, added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Pack was playing its first game in two weeks and only brought nine players to Saint Louis as the team left five players back in Raleigh.
NC State was up to the challenge early though. After spotting the Billikens the first four points of the game, the Pack rattled off the next six points to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish until under 10 minutes remained in the game.
NC State led by as many as 10 points in the first half and the Pack went into the locker room with a 35-29 lead.
Saint Louis closed within one multiple times at the beginning of the second half, but NC State had a response for every Billiken basket early in the second half and took its biggest lead of the final 20 minutes on a rebound dunk by Bates to give NC State a 55-48 lead with 11:18 remaining.
The Pack could not build on the lead though, going cold from the field which allowed Saint Louis to take its first lead of the game since early in the first half on a basket with 8:06 left.
After NC State responded with a field goal to retake the lead, Saint Louis scored the next eight points to take a seven-point lead with 5:53 to go. NC State could not get closer than five points the rest of the way.
The Pack forced Saint Louis into 21 turnovers and had an 18-3 advantage in points off turnovers, but the Billikens owned the boards, outrebounding NC State, 53-26.
NC State returns to action Saturday when it hosts Campbell (4-1) at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on the ACC Network and will be the first of the 2020-21 season for the Pack at PNC Arena.
