LOS ANGELES – Elissa Cunane added to her list of preseason honors as she was featured on the Top 30 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's. The honor is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college basketball.
It is the third National Player of the Year watch list for Cunane, as she was also named to the preseason lists for the 2021 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy and the 2021 Wade Trophy. The junior was also a Preseason All-ACC Team selection and is on the 2021 Lisa Leslie Award watch list that honors the best center in women's collegiate basketball.
Through two games, Cunane is averaging 14.5 points and is shooting 10-of-17 (.588) from the field. Last season, the Summerfield, N.C., native averaged a team-leading 16.4 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting an impressive 174-of-318 (.547) from the field. She was ranked in the national top 30 in five individual statistical categories at the conclusion of 2019-20: double-doubles (14), defensive rebounds per game (6.9), field-goal percentage (.547), free throws made (159) and total rebounds (308).
Just over halfway through her Wolfpack career, Cunane has compiled 1,017 career points and 530 career rebounds. She reached the 1,000 career point milestone in the Pack's first game of the season, becoming the ninth active ACC player, the only active junior in the conference and the 35th player in program history to surpass that mark.
The Wooden Award committee will announce a midseason list and a late season list before releasing the National Ballot of 15 players who will be voted upon. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight, and the winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament.
