RALEIGH, N.C. – After starting this unusual 2020 season with eight straight ACC opponents, NC State will entertain its lone non-conference foe of the year as the Wolfpack will host #21 Liberty Saturday night at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Â
The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m., and will be televised by RSN.
Â
"We have a chance to play a top 20 team in Liberty this week," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "An undefeated team, very good team, good staff, and a team that's playing with a lot of confidence, has two ACC wins with Syracuse and Virginia Tech."
Â
Liberty comes into Carter-Finley Stadium a perfect 8-0. They are tied with Notre Dame for the most wins thus far, and are one of only seven teams nationally still undefeated after playing at least five games this season.
Â
The Flames have already picked up a pair of ACC road wins this season, winning 38-21 at Syracuse and 38-35 at Virginia Tech two weeks ago.
Â
"That locker room is full of guys that felt like they could have played at a higher level," said Doeren. "Those kids will have a chip on their shoulder when they play a Power Five team.
Â
"They want to be noticed, they know that this is a chance to showcase, not just their individual abilities, but how they can play as a football team against teams that have a Power Five name."
Â
Liberty is the Pack's ninth opponent in 2020, and the fifth foe to be ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll. Those five ranked opponents are the most faced by a NC State squad in a single season since 1997.
Â
"It's a good football team with good players, it has confidence," said Doeren. "Obviously, that's what you want to have. It's a great opportunity for us to play a team like that in the Top 20 that's undefeated."
Â
This week's game will mark the first time the Pack has faced a ranked non-conference opponent at home since 2008. That year, NC State faced #15 East Carolina (W, 30-24) and #13 South Florida (L, 10-41) in back-to-back weeks.
Â
The Wolfpack and Flames have met just one time previously, a 47-21 NC State win in 2011 at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Â
"At the end of the day, it's really going to be about how we play," said Doeren. "Whether we're playing against a Power Five team or not, we need to be better than we were last Saturday.
Â
"That's going to be our focus, just executing. Each player on the team understanding what they have to do in their role, so that collectively we can play better than we just did against Florida State."
