CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – NC State Volleyball head coach Luka Slabe earned his first win as a head coach Friday evening in a 3-1 victory over Virginia. The Wolfpack hit a season-high .324 as a team, including three-players who recorded double-digit kills.
"Of course I'm happy," said Slabe. "I'm happy for our first win together, I hope there's many more to come. But I'm really trying to stay course and worry about improving our team, improving our staff and improving everyone who surrounds our program. It's a good win, a good start. And tomorrow's another day."
Jade Parchment was a hot hitter for NC State with a match-high 23 kills, one shy of her personal best. The junior hit .422 in addition to five digs, two assists, a block and a service ace.
The Wolfpack attack was also boosted by outstanding performances by Melissa Evans and Lydia Adam. Evans recorded 16 kills, marking the fourth-straight match she has played in where she has recorded double-digit kills. She also had a season-high five blocks while Adam set a personal-best with 11 kills in addition to five digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Virginia taking the first three points of the match, NC State fired off a 5-0 run and never looked back. The Pack hit .344 as a team and was led by Parchment with a match-best seven kills. The hitting connection continued into the second set where the Wolfpack hit .577 as a team, including a .750 performance in the set from Evans.
With the second set tied at 10-10, NC State pushed its lead to four off back-to-back kills by Parchment and consecutive service aces from Evans. NC State's lead reached as large as eight, but the Cavaliers couldn't close the gap.
The third set was tightly contested, featuring 11 ties all the way up to 17-17. Virginia took a two-point lead off a pair of errors from NC State. Down by three, Evans starved off a set point with a kill but NC State couldn't hold off Virginia any longer as the Cavaliers forced a fourth set.
The back-and-forth action continued to open the fourth set tied at 11. NC State took the momentum on a solo block by Pam Chukwujekwu, jump starting a 4-1 run for a 15-11 lead. Virginia would not get closer than two, before NC State ended the match on three consecutive kills.
