RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State volleyball senior Melissa Evans recorded her 1,000 career kill Sunday afternoon against North Carolina. Evans becomes the first NC State player since Julia Brown in 2017 to reach the mark, and the fourth active player in the ACC to have 1,000 career kills.
Despite the stellar performances by Evans and junior Jade Parchment, North Carolina came away with the 3-1 win (25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 25-17).
Parchment was firing on all cylinders for the Pack, recording a match and season-high 19 kills with a .300 hitting percentage. She also tied her personal best with five blocks while adding 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After North Carolina (4-2) came away with the first set, NC State (0-4) rebounded with a dominating performance in the second where they hit .500 as a team. North Carolina tied the match at six points apiece before NC State surged ahead on a 4-2 run which included kills by Parchment and Riley Shaak. Six more unanswered points gave the Pack a 17-10 lead they would not relinquish.
NC State carried its momentum into the third set, taking as large as a five-point lead at 15-10. The Tar Heels quickly came back with a 7-2 run, tying the set at 18 and entering a back-and-forth battle which featured three ties down the stretch. Down 23-21, Lydia Adam and Pam Chukwujekwu came up with huge kills, however, North Carolina took the set on a kill and NC State service error.
The fourth set was another tight-battle, with five ties and four lead changes. After the Tar Heels took a 7-6 lead, NC State pulled within one point but couldn't find an answer for the North Carolina block who fueled UNC to a 16-9 lead. The Pack fought all the way back within three points, 18-15, thanks to the help of three kills by Parchment, but could not further close the gap.
