Cunane posts second-straight 20+ point performance, Konig surpasses 1,000 career points
RALEIGH – The ninth-ranked NC State women's basketball team (14-0, 3-0 ACC) continued to build on its perfect start to the 2019-20 season with an 80-60 victory over Virginia Sunday afternoon on Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
With the victory, the Wolfpack remained the only unbeaten team in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
NC State never trailed in the game and owned a lead from two minutes into the first quarter until the final buzzer. The Pack nailed 11 three-pointers in the game and shot just over 49 percent (28-of-57) from the field.
The Wolfpack also did a tremendous job of sharing the ball and set a new season high in assists. NC State assisted on 24 of its 28 made field goals, and five different players dished out three or more on the day.
Elissa Cunane posted her eighth double-double of the season with a game-leading 26 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 8-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the victory. The sophomore center has tallied 54 points in her last two outings alone, as she matched her career high of 28 points in the Pack's Thursday night win against Virginia Tech.
Jakia Brown-Turner entered double digits in scoring for the second time in conference play with 13 points, including a 3-of-6 clip from long range. Grace Hunter added 10 points, with seven of those coming down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard Aislinn Konig reached the 1,000-point milestone as she hit a three in the Wolfpack's final possession of the first quarter. The achievement made her the 14th active ACC player to surpass 1,000 points in her career.
The Wolfpack ended the first quarter with a seven-point lead (23-16), but the Cavaliers crept as close as four points in the early stages of the second quarter. NC State then strung together a 10-0 run that spanned three minutes and held Virginia to just one made field goal over the final 7:32 of the half to carry a 10-point advantage (38-28) into the break.
Virginia managed to get as close as nine on two occasions at the start of the second half, but NC State went on another run of 16 unanswered points to build its lead up to over 20. The Cavaliers would get no closer in the fourth quarter, and the Pack led by as many as 26 points.
Jocelyn Willoughby led the Cavaliers in scoring with 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting. She also drew seven fouls on the night and went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
NC State returns to action with a pair of road games, the first coming against North Carolina on Thursday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, and the game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks.
