GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State cross country senior Elly Henes was named ACC Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2019 season, as announced Thursday afternoon by the league office. The honor made her the first woman in program history to earn the award.
Henes was one of a total of seven student-athletes between the Wolfpack's men's and women's cross country programs to be honored as a member of the All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams.
The Cary, N.C., native became the first-ever ACC Performer of the Year for the Wolfpack women in 2019 and was also named NCAA Southeast Region Women's Athlete of the Year during the Pack's most recent season. Henes wrapped up a decorated cross country career with a personal-best national result, a 10th-place finish that garnered her All-America honors for the third season in a row. She also won gold at both the 2019 ACC Championships and the 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional and was the first Wolfpack woman to do so since 2010.
2019 All-ACC Women's Academic Cross Country Team
Kelsey Chmiel, Fr. - Animal Science
Elly Henes, Sr. - Psychology
Savannah Shaw, So. - Business Administration
Julia Zachgo, Jr. - Business Administration
Isabel Zimmermann, Jr. - Nutrition Science
All five honorees were All-Region performers and finished in the top 35 at the ACC Championships during the 2019 cross country season. Chmiel, Henes, Shaw, Zachgo and Zimmermann helped lead the Wolfpack women to their fourth straight and 25th overall ACC title in 2019. The team went on to claim its fourth regional championship in a row and wrapped up the season with a fifth-place team finish at the NCAA Championships, where Chmiel joined Henes as an All-American.
This marks the first All-ACC Academic honors for Zachgo and freshman Chmiel. Shaw was honored for the second time in her career, and Henes and Zimmermann garnered All-ACC Academic status for the third-straight season.
2019 All-ACC Men's Academic Cross Country Team
Gavin Gaynor, R-Jr. - Chemical Engineering
Ian Shanklin, Jr. - Exploratory Studies/Business Administration
Shanklin and Gaynor each garnered both All-ACC and All-Region honors during the 2019 cross country season, finishing as the Pack's top two runners in both of those meets. Both men secured career-best finishes in all three postseason meets and helped lead NC State's men to an NCAA Championships bid. At the national meet, Shanklin became an All-American with his top-40 finish. His honors were the first for NC State's men since the 2013 campaign.
Gaynor has been honored as a member of the All-ACC Academic Team two seasons in a row, and the honors also mark the second of Shanklin's career after he last earned the award in 2017.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average during the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade point average during their academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of at least 3.0 for the current academic year, is set to be released in July.
