RICHMOND, Va. – 13 kills from Melissa Evans and a season-best 11 from Lauryn Terry wasn't enough for the Wolfpack to overcome Alabama in a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 21-25, 15-25) loss Saturday afternoon at the VCU Invitational. Terry did not have a hitting error until late in the third set, and ended the match with a team-best .409 clip.
The Pack had a total of six hitters record at least four kills, including seven from Pam Chukwujekwu and Jessica Kemp. Chukwujekwu also recorded a career-high five blocks while Kemp had a career-high eight digs. Libero Kaylee Frazier bested her career-high from yesterday with 22 digs, earning All-Tournament honors. Frazier totaled 58 digs in the weekend's three matches, averaging 5.27 per set, in addition to 10 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State held control in the first set, led by Daniela McDonald and Evans who each had four kills. The Pack opened with a 7-4 lead in the first set before Alabama was able to use four straight-points to move ahead 12-10. The Crimson Tide spread their lead eventually to 17-14 before a service error and two kills from Terry helped the Pack take the slim 18-17 margin. Over the next several points, neither team was able to create much of a gap. Alabama eventually reached set point, 24-23, but NC State was able to hold off back-to-back set points eventually taking the set 26-24 on a block from Chukwujekwu.
Alabama took the second and third set as several errors plagued the Wolfpack. There were three service errors between the two teams to open the fourth set but Alabama notched the first kill of the set, tying the match 2-2. Alabama recorded four-straight points for a 5-2 lead that NC State would struggle to come back from.
