Henes named Co-Performer of the Week, Chmiel honored as Freshman of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After opening their 2019 campaigns this past weekend, NC State senior Elly Henes and freshman Kelsey Chmiel were honored as ACC Cross Country Performers of the Week. Henes was named Women's Co-Performer of the Week, and Chmiel was named the Women's Freshman of the Week.
Henes led the Wolfpack women to the team crown at the adidas XC Challenge by placing first individually at NC State's lone home meet and 2019 season opener. The Cary, N.C., native led the field with a 16:46.9 5K, just four seconds off of her 5K personal best. The win at the adidas XC Challenge was the first individual cross country title of Henes' Wolfpack career.
The honors mark the third time that Henes has garnered cross country weekly accolades. She was last named ACC Performer of the Week on Oct. 4, 2017, and she earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors once during her rookie season in 2016.
Chmiel made an impressive Wolfpack debut at the adidas XC Challenge, finishing as runner-up behind Henes. She ran the fastest 5K time of her career in her first collegiate race, clocking in at 16:57.0 to help pace NC State to the team win.
NC State hits the road for the first time next weekend as it heads to South Bend, Ind., for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. That meet is set for a 1 p.m. start on Friday, Oct. 4.
