TEMPE, Ariz. – NC State men's tennis senior Alexis Galarneau and junior Tadas Babelis will begin the 2019-20 season with national rankings as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason standings on Tuesday.
Galarneau was tabbed with the highest singles ranking of his career at No. 12 to start the fall slate, and he and Babelis are also ranked as a pair in doubles at No. 34.
Galarneau's singles standing comes after he finished the 2018-19 campaign at No. 26, the highest final singles ranking for a Wolfpack player in recorded ITA history, which dates back to 1981. He is the second-highest ranked ACC singles player in the preseason standings behind No. 1 Carl Söderlund of Virginia.
The Laval, Canada, native compiled a 16-10 overall record during 2019 dual match play, with all of his matches played at the top singles spot for the Pack. Seven of his victories on the year came against nationally-ranked opponents. His second-straight bid to compete at the NCAA Singles Championships made him the first NC State player since at least the 2000 season to reach the national tournament in back-to-back seasons.
Galarneau spent the entirety of last season ranked in the national top 45 and did not drop outside of the top 30 after March 5. His finish in the final standings made him just the fourth player in program history to be nationally ranked at the conclusion of three seasons in a row. He capped off his junior campaign with First Team All-ACC honors and was named ITA Carolina Region Player to Watch.
On the doubles side, Babelis and Galarneau's ranking makes it three seasons in a row that a Wolfpack pair has been featured in the preseason standings. The duo most recently earned selection to compete in the qualifying draw of October's ITA All-American Championships.
NC State opens fall action this weekend with players competing at the Duke Bonk Invitational Sept. 20-22 and the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sept. 20-23.
