RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite dropping the first set of the match, the NC State Volleyball team roared back to a 3-1 victory against Western Carolina Friday night in Boone, N.C. The Wolfpack tallied four double-digit kill performances, including a career-high tying-20 from Melissa Evans. The offense also had five hitters hit above .400.
As a team, the Wolfpack totaled nine career-highs in addition to nine different season highs. Included in those, was Kaylee Frazier's 27 digs. Frazier has now bested her previous career-high in three consecutive matches. The 27 digs are the second most in a single-match this season among ACC teams.
Jessica Kemp notched a career-high 13 kills followed by Jade Parchment's season-high of 12 and Lauryn Terry's 10. Nina Sharpton distributed the offense, notching her own career-high of 40 assists. The redshirt sophomore also tallied 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
HEAD COACH LINDA HAMPTON-KEITH'S THOUGHTS
"I was thrilled with our team's performance today. We started off really rocky dropping the first set and I thought we had kind of a pivotal moment there where we could've gone either way. To see our team step up and confidently gut out the second set, 29-27, and then from there regain their footing and some confidence. We started playing a lot cleaner from there, that was really a positive note of the day. I'm really thrilled that our team showed that kind of maturity in that moment, where it could've gone either way and they chose to go by the way of confidence and execution at a high level."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Western Carolina (2-7) worked their way to a 25-20 victory in the first set, the Catamounts also mounted a 10-5 lead in the second. NC State recorded four-straight points to pull within one, 10-9, but WCU pushed out to a four-point lead, 14-10. Kemp tied the match for NC State, 14-14, with three-straight kills. The set continued to go back-and-forth, tied all the way to 27 before Pam Chukwujekwu and Parchment clinched the final two points needed.
Even with six early ties in the third set, NC State controlled the tempo early and took a 12-9 lead with four unanswered points. The Wolfpack lead reached 22-15, in part due to Parchment's six kills in the set. Western Carolina tried to mount a late comeback, holding off two set points from NC State. Evans finally closed out the set with a kill.
The fourth set also remained tightly contested in the first half with the teams even at 10 before NC State turned it on, outscoring the Catamounts 15-6 to end the match.
