RALEIGH, N.C. - The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has announced that Wolfpack graduate defensive end James Smith-Williams has been named to the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® - one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football.  Smith-Williams was one of just 22 (11 in the FBS) student-athletes selected from 137 nominees.
Â
Smith-Williams, a team captain in 2019, has been a standout on and off the field for the Wolfpack. An academic All-ACC performer, he has been involved in a myriad of community service efforts, starting even before he came to NC State.
Â
Most recently, Smith-Williams organized a donation drive effort at a baseball game to benefit Interact of Wake County – which provides services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. He has also been instrumental in organizing the Wolfpack's #SetTheExpectation game, set for Sept. 21 vs. Ball State.
Â
The Raleigh native has volunteered for Read Across America, Habitat for Humanity and Be the Match, where he signed students up for bone marrow donations. He created a mentor program at West Millbrook Middle School, worked with an after-school program and has made countless visits to elementary schools.
Â
On the field, Smith-Williams is in his second season as a starter and led the team in tackles for loss and sacks last season.
Â
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be invited to the 2020 Allstate® Sugar Bowl® and will join Tebow and Allstate volunteers to give back to New Orleans through a special community service project. Allstate will recognize the team during the halftime show.
Â
Fans are invited to visit ESPN.com/Allstate to vote for the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain once per day, now through Nov. 22. The team captain will be honored at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN later this season.
Â
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992, by the College Football Association, to recognize extra efforts by players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate became the presenting sponsor starting with the 2008 season.
