RALEIGH, N.C. – Melissa Evans recorded double-digit kills for the fifth match of the season, however, the NC State volleyball team was unable to hold off ECU Tuesday night in Reynolds Coliseum. ECU came back from being down 0-2 to win the match, 3-2 (19-25, 19-25, 29-27, 25-21, 15-10)
Evans led the Wolfpack with 14 kills followed by Jessica Kemp's 11, which tied a season-high. Pam Chukwujekwu was also a highlight for NC State offensively, hitting .455 with seven kills. Nina Sharpton set a career-high with 24 assists.
HEAD COACH LINDA HAMPTON-KEITH
"We're a young team but that's not an excuse. I think we just have to continue to learn and grow through the process and learn and grow with each opportunity. I think the frustrating thing is we saw what we could do in week one. We could play this really nice volleyball. We need to figure out how to get them back to where they need to be."
MATCH REWIND
After a back-and-forth open of the first set, NC State took a 23-17 lead following an 11-2 run. The Pirates held off NC State for two points, but a kill from Evans set up match point before the Pirates' ninth error of the match closed out the set.
NC State carried its strong start into the second set, hitting at a .341 clip and committing four attack errors. After six ties, NC State took the 7-6 lead on back-to-back kills from Daniela McDonald. The Wolfpack never relinquished its lead, seeing four kills each from McDonald, Chukwujekwu and Parchment.
ECU opened strong in the third set with a 7-1 lead and held the Wolfpack off all the way to 16-11. NC State showed its fight taking the lead at one point, 23-22, on a service ace from Kristen McDaniel. Still tied at 26-26, Kemp put NC State ahead by one with her ninth kill of the match. The Pirates found a response, putting up three consecutive points to take the third set.
After ECU also won the fourth set, NC State struggled to get its momentum back. The Pirates took a 5-0 lead, but four-straight points for NC State gave them new life. ECU continued to string together multiple points, creating a gap that the Wolfpack couldn't erase.
