LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 2020 NC State softball season will officially open Feb. 7-9 at the NFCA Division 1 Leadoff Classic Presented by Rawlings in Clearwater, Fla. The 2020 field features the Wolfpack in addition to 14 other collegiate programs, 10 of which made the postseason in 2019, and the United States Women's National Team.
Following a five-year hiatus, the Division I Classic makes its return to Clearwater, the site of the final three from 2012-14. The first 15 tournaments were held in Columbus, Ga. from 1996 through 2010. The 19th edition of the Classic will be held at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The season begins Friday, Feb. 7 against Minnesota at 2:30 p.m. followed by a game against Ole Miss at 5 p.m. The weekend continues with a 10 a.m. matchup versus Kentucky on Saturday before facing off against Missouri State at 12:30 p.m. The Wolfpack concludes the weekend against Mississippi State Sunday at 12 p.m.
Four of NC State's five opponents made the NCAA Tournament last season, including Minnesota, who made its first Women's College World Series appearance in program history.
The Wolfpack compiled 31 wins in 2019, the first season under the guidance of Jennifer Patrick-Swift, the most for the team in a single season since 2015. NC State also advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, upsetting the No. 1 seed Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals. NC State became the first No. 8 seed since that same season to advance to the semifinal round.
