PALO ALTO, Calif. – Rising NC State swimming junior Julia Poole capped off the Wolfpack's time at the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships with a podium finish as she placed third in the 200-meter individual medley Sunday evening.
Poole started her day of 200 IM action by taking ownership of the team record in the event during the morning prelims session. The Cary, N.C., native posted a 2:13.02 to rank second coming out of the heats, booking her a spot in the A final.
She went on to drop even more time during the finals session with her 2:12.53 good for a third-place finish.
Alumnus Ryan Held, who won the 100-meter freestyle on the first day of the meet, added another gold medal to his count as he picked up the victory in the 50-meter freestyle. Held went 21.88 in the preliminary heats and bettered that lifetime best with a 21.87 in the A final. He was the only man in the field to swim a sub-22 second time.
The Wolfpack also impressed in the final distance freestyle races of the national meet, with all three NC State distance swimmers finishing in the top eight of their respective events.
Alumna Hannah Moore swam in the fastest heat of the 1,500-meter freestyle. She touched the wall in 16:10.92 and finished just off the podium for fourth overall.
On the men's side, both Pack men secured top-eight finishes in the 800-meter freestyle. Incoming freshman Ross Dant (7:56.03) and rising junior Eric Knowles (7:57.00) both clocked lifetime bests to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.
