NEW ORLEANS, La. – NC State will begin the 2019 season with both its men's and women's cross country teams ranked atop the preseason standings for the Southeast Region.
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its first set of regional rankings on Monday afternoon, and both Wolfpack squads were selected as preseason favorites for the 2019 campaign. The rankings come after NC State's squads swept the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships titles for the second time in three years as both the men and the women picked up first-place finishes at the meet. All of the Wolfpack's scorers for the men and the women garnered All-Region honors in 2018.
Last season, the Pack men earned their second win in three seasons at Regionals, upsetting the top two teams in the region to claim the program's ninth title since 2000. NC State saw three runners place in the top 15 and returns four of its scorers to the 2019 roster – All-Region honorees Ian Shanklin (11th), Joe Bistritz (12th), Edwin Rutto (15th) and Gavin Gaynor (23rd).
On the women's side, the Wolfpack claimed its third-straight regional title in 2018, with all seven runners finishing in the top 35 in a field of almost 250 participants. Elly Henes (2nd) and Dominique Clairmonte (5th) led the way and placed in the top five for NC State. Both return to the 2019 squad, as do additional All-Region performers Isabel Zimmermann and Heather Holt.
Regional rankings will be released by the USTFCCCA each Monday of the regular season beginning Sept. 16, and both Wolfpack teams will head to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 15.
NC State is scheduled to open its 2019 season at home on Friday, Sept. 20 as it hosts its annual adidas XC Challenge. The meet will be held at the WakeMed Soccer Park XC Course in Cary, N.C.
