CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Monika Hartl was named a Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Scholar All-American, as announced by the publication on Monday.
This is the second academic honor of her career as she was recently named to the 2019 All-ACC Academic Team. The accolade marks the eighth time in the last nine years that at least one Wolfpack player has been named to the prestigious list.
The Bamberg, Germany, native turned in a cumulative 3.672 grade-point average for the 2018-19 year as well as a 74.19 stroke average, which was the second-lowest on the team. The applied nutrition major competed in a total of nine tournaments, including seven in the team's lineup, and turned in three top 20 finishes along seven under par rounds.
"I'm really proud of Monika for stepping up to balance her academics as a nutrition major while averaging a 73.72 stroke average this spring semester," said head coach Page Marsh. "She went from playing in just one tournament in the fall to having every round in the spring count towards the team total. I'm excited for her to continue to build on her success."
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. Players must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and have competed in at least 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Hartl's accomplishment completes a strong spring semester for the NC State women's golf program on the course and in the classroom. The squad turned in a 3.518 GPA, its highest total since 2012, and had seven student-athletes named to the NC State Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher).
Additionally, four were named to the Dean's List, including Naomi Ko and Christina Lu who turned in perfect 4.0 GPAs this spring.
On the course, the 2018-19 season was capped off with the Pack's 17th postseason appearance in the last 18 seasons. NC State finished ninth out of 18 teams with an 881 (+17) at the NCAA Norman Regional, which is the second-lowest score shot in program history at a regional championship.
"I'm also really proud of the accomplishments of our team as a whole in their dual roles as student-athletes. We finished 36th nationally and earned several honors in the classroom. It was truly a balanced approach earned through sacrifice and hard work. They worked through the challenges of being a student and an athlete, which is never easy but so fulfilling."
