GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State baseball's Patrick Bailey, Jonny Butler and Cameron Cotter earned a spot on the 2019 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
For Bailey, this is his second academic honor from the ACC in as many years, while for Butler and Cotter it's the first of their careers.
Bailey, a Greensboro, N.C., native, served as the Wolfpack's primary backstop with 60 starts on the season. He compiled a .288 clip with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percentage. Defensively, he committed just five errors in 476 chances for a .989 fielding percentage and threw out 33 percent of base runners attempting to swipe a bag.
An All-ACC First Team selection, ABCA Atlantic All-Region honoree and Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American, he was named one of 14 semifinalists for the Buster Posey Award, which honors the nation's best catcher.
Bailey is a sport management major and is currently playing with USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team.
Butler, an accounting major who hails from Channahon, Ill., started 60 games in the outfield and finished with a .267 batting average and 67 hits, including 10 doubles, two triples and three home runs. He tallied 20 multi-hit games on the year, highlighted by 4-for-4 outings vs. Towson on March 19 and at North Carolina on May 17.
Cotter, a biological sciences major, made 22 appearances, including three starts, on the mound after redshirting the 2018 season due to injury. He compiled a 3.00 earned-run average and 5-3 record with three saves, striking out 36 batters in 39.0 innings of work.
The Summerfield, N.C., native threw 2.1 innings in the combined 11-0 shutout win at North Carolina on May 18, and went a career-long 5.2 innings on March 27 vs. North Carolina A&T. Additionally, he fanned a career-high five batters vs. Clemson on May 12.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
