Knowles, Vazaios Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the third season in a row, the NC State swimming and diving program was represented on the Google Cloud Academic All-America Teams. Sophomore Eric Knowles and senior captain Andreas Vazaios were honored as members of the 2019 At-Large Teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization Friday afternoon.
Vazaios earned a spot on the Second Team, marking the second season in a row that he has been named an Academic All-American. Knowles, who garnered the honors for the first time in his career, was named to the Third Team.
Vazaios, who has compiled a 3.79 GPA as a psychology major, adds to his list of academic honors from the 2018-19 season. The Athens, Greece, native was an Academic All-ACC honoree and was recognized for his excellence in the pool and in the classroom by being named 2019 ACC Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In the pool, Vazaios put together a decorated career as a member of the Wolfpack, highlighted by four national titles – two individual golds and two relay golds. He repeated as national champion in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2019 NCAA Championships to cap off his NC State career. The 14-time All-American took home first in the event in record-setting fashion as he lowered his own ACC and program records.
Knowles, a materials science and engineering major with a perfect 4.0 GPA was also recognized as a member of the 2019 Academic All-ACC Team and was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American in 2018.
The Dayton, Ohio native gained All-America status in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle with the first top-16 national finishes of his Wolfpack career at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Knowles placed on the podium twice at the 2019 ACC Championships, winning the conference title in the 500-yard freestyle after clocking back-to-back lifetime bests to take home gold. He also picked up All-ACC honors with a silver-medal finish in the 400-yard individual medley.
