GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rising NC State softball junior Sam Russ has been honored as a member of the 2019 All-ACC Academic Softball Team, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Russ played a key role for NC State during her sophomore campaign as she started all 58 games in left field and served as a solid leadoff hitter at the top of the Wolfpack lineup. She garnered her first-ever all-conference honors as she was named to the 2019 All-ACC Second Team.
Russ wrote her name into the NC State record books in 2019 as she broke the program's single-season record for steals. Her 32 stolen bases on the year ranked third in the ACC and 22nd in the nation at the conclusion of the season.
The Charlotte, N.C., native led the Wolfpack in multiple offensive categories. Her .326 batting average, 56 hits and 42 runs were all team bests, with 26 of those hits and 19 of those runs coming during ACC regular-season action.
The outfielder also impressed with her extra-base hit numbers. Russ tallied seven doubles, a team-leading five triples and five home runs on the way to compiling a .512 slugging percentage during the season.
Russ is majoring in biological sciences at NC State, and the All-ACC Academic Team honors are the first of her Wolfpack career. She posted a 3.071 semester grade point average (GPA) during Spring 2019 and boasts a 3.236 cumulative GPA.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 GPA during the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA during their academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered.
The ACC Honor Roll for all conference student-athletes is set to be released in July.
