GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore outfielder Sam Russ of the NC State softball team was honored as an All-ACC performer as she was named to the 2019 All-ACC Softball Second Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The honors mark Russ's first-ever selection to the all-conference team.
The Charlotte, N.C. native played a key role for NC State in her sophomore campaign, starting all 55 games in left field and serving as a solid leadoff hitter at the top of the Wolfpack lineup. Russ leads the team with a .321 overall batting average in 162 at bats with a .366 clip in conference games.
Russ wrote her name into the NC State record books as she took sole ownership of first place in program history for single-season steals. Her 31 on the year is the new Wolfpack record heading into postseason action. That number ranks third in the ACC and 30th nationally.
Her 52 hits and 40 runs are also team bests, as 26 of those hits and 19 of those runs scored came during ACC play. Russ hit five home runs during the regular season and owns a .506 slugging percentage.
As a team, the Wolfpack picked up nine wins in conference play during the 2019 campaign, including series wins over Boston College and Duke and a series sweep over Louisville.
NC State begins postseason play Wednesday in the first round of the 2019 ACC Softball Championship. The No. 8 seed Wolfpack will face No. 9 seed Syracuse at 1 p.m. at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on the league's Regional Sports Networks.
