ORLANDO, Fla. – NC State men's tennis captain Alexis Galarneau wrapped up his junior campaign as he fell 6-4, 6-2 to top-seeded Nuno Borges of Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships Monday afternoon.
Galarneau ended a stellar junior campaign during which he posted a 16-10 singles record as he competed alongside some of the nation's best players at the top singles spot for the Wolfpack. He defeated seven nationally-ranked opponents in 2019, has been ranked in the national top 25 since March 5 and has yet to fall outside of the top 45 during the season.
The Laval, Canada native became the first Wolfpack player since at least the 2000 season to earn back-to-back selections to the NCAA Singles Championships and also earned a spot on the First Team All-ACC for the second season in a row.
Galarneau matched up against the nation's top-ranked player in the first round of national tournament action. After going down three games early in the first set, Galarneau managed to break and then hold serve to draw back within one before Borges ultimately took the first set. The Mississippi State senior went on to go up a pair of breaks in the second set on the way to taking the 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets victory to advance to the second round.
The match also marks the conclusion of NC State's 2019 spring season. The final rankings of the year are set to be released in the coming days as the team standings come out on May 22 and final singles/doubles standings are announced on May 29.
