RALEIGH, N.C.– Sophomore Eric Knowles and senior captain Andreas Vazaios of the NC State men's swimming and diving team were honored as members of the 2019 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large Team.
Knowles and Vazaios are two of a total of 10 men who were named First Team honorees from District 3, which includes NCAA Division I schools from North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The honors mark the second year in a row that multiple members of the men's swimming and diving squad have been named to the Academic All-District Team.
Vazaios, who has compiled a 3.79 GPA as a psychology major, was honored for the second straight year after also being named a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-American at the conclusion of last season. The Academic All-ACC honoree was recognized for his excellence in the pool and in the classroom by being named 2019 ACC Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In the pool, Vazaios put together a decorated career as a member of the Wolfpack, highlighted by four national titles – two individual golds and two relay golds. The Athens, Greece native repeated as national champion in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2019 NCAA Championships to cap off his NC State career. The 14-time All-American took home first in the event in record-setting fashion as he lowered his own ACC and program records.
Knowles, a materials science and engineering major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was honored as a member of the Academic All-District Team for the first time in his career. He adds to his list of academic awards as Knowles was also recognized as a member of the 2019 Academic All-ACC Team and was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American in 2018.
The Dayton, Ohio native gained All-America status in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle with the first top-16 national finishes of his Wolfpack career at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Knowles placed on the podium twice at the 2019 ACC Championships, winning the conference title in the 500-yard freestyle after clocking back-to-back lifetime bests to take home gold. He also picked up All-ACC honors with a silver-medal finish in the 400-yard individual medley.
Both Knowles and Vazaios will be eligible for consideration for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
