TALLAHASSE, Fla. – An incredible ACC Championship run by the NC State softball team came to an end in the semifinal round as the Wolfpack fell to rival UNC-Chapel Hill, 6-1, Friday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.
NC State moves to 31-27 on the year, while UNC-Chapel Hill improves to 35-17.
After the score remained tied through three complete, the Tar Heels used a five-run fourth inning to take a lead that they held on to for the remainder of the outing.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for NC State. During that streak, NC State swept Louisville to end the regular season and won its first two games of the ACC Championship, including an upset over No. 1 seed and Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech, to reach Friday's semifinal matchup.
The Pack's 31 wins during the 2019 season, its first under the leadership of head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift, are the most for the team in a single season since the 2015 campaign. During conference play, the Wolfpack picked up wins in three ACC series before going on to earn its first berth to the ACC Championship since the 2017 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UNC-CH managed to get a pair of base runners on in the bottom of the first inning and scored a run to take the early 1-0 lead. Leah Murray drew a leadoff walk and stole second. A single moved her over to third, and she went on to plate the run on a sac fly out to right field.
- In the top of the second inning, Brigette Nordberg drew a walk to start the Wolfpack's half of the frame. After advancing to second on a passed ball and taking third on a foul out to right field, Nordberg scored the tying run as Jessica Moore sent a high-flying ball over the Tar Heel right fielder for her first hit of the series and an RBI double.
- The Tar Heels took a multi-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on the corners with just one out, Zoe Goodman knocked a three-run home run over the left field wall to put the score at 4-1 in favor of UNC-CH.
- UNC-Chapel Hill scored a total of five runs in the frame off of four hits and a Wolfpack error to establish a 6-1 lead through four complete. The score would stay there as the Tar Heels picked up the win to advance.
