INDIANAPOLIS – NC State men's tennis junior Alexis Galarneau was selected to compete in the singles draw of the 2019 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, as announced Tuesday. It marks the second season in a row that Galarneau has been selected for individual competition at the national tournament.
Galarneau, who is currently ranked 21st in the nation, received an at-large bid and will be part of a field of 64 singles players that is set to compete in the single-elimination tournament. The NCAA Singles Championships will be played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. from May 20-25 following the conclusion of the team championships. The bracket for the event is set to be released at a later date.
The Laval, Canada native once again put together a stellar season playing at the top singles spot for the Wolfpack. Galarneau went 15-8 in dual match play during the 2019 season, with seven of his wins coming against ranked opponents. He beat the nation's No. 15 player on two occasions during his junior campaign, as his wins against Georgia's Emil Reinberg and Virginia's Carl Söderlund marked the highest ranked victories of his career.
Galarneau became just the fourth player in program history to garner All-ACC status at least three times in his career as he was named a member of the First Team All-ACC for the second season in a row. He has been ranked in the national top 25 since the March 5 edition of the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings and has not fallen outside of the top 45 this season.
With his selection to the NCAA Singles Championships, Galarneau becomes the first Wolfpack player since at least 2000 to receive back-to-back singles bids.
NC State will open action in the team portion of the NCAA Championships on Friday, May 3 as it travels to Knoxville, Tenn. to take on Middle Tennessee in the first round.
