RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State Wrestling and the Wolfpack Wrestling Club will be sending 14 individuals to compete at the 2019 Marine Corps U.S. Open in Las Vegas this weekend.
Â
Seven athletes that currently train at the Wolfpack's Regional Training Center (RTC) will be in action in the Senior Men's Freestyle tournament, while seven current members of the Wolfpack wrestling team will see action at the UWW Junior Nationals. Both the Senior and Junior levels will be in action on Friday and Saturday at South Point Arena.
Â
The U.S. Open is streamed live on FloWrestling, which will also provide live results and updated brackets.
Â
With their placement at the U.S. Open this weekend, all wrestlers competing are vying for a spot at the 2019 World Team Trials which will be held in Raleigh at Reynolds Coliseum on May 17-19.
Â
A trio of former NC State All-Americans will see action this weekend: Kevin Jack (70 kg), Tommy Gantt (74 kg) and Michael Macchiavello (92 kg). Gantt and Macchiavello are both currently ranked fourth nationally in their weight class in the latest USA Wrestling Freestyle rankings.
Â
Timmy McCall (92 kg), who also trains at the Wolfpack's RTC, is fifth in those same rankings and will be in Macchiavello's bracket in Las Vegas.
Â
A trio of former NC State wrestlers will also head to the U.S. Open on the senior side: Quinton Godley (74 kg), Lee Davis (79 kg) and Michael Boykin (97 kg).
Â
Of those, these received pre-seeds: Gantt (#2), Macchiavello (#3), Godley (#4) and McCall (#5).
Â
Seven members of next year's NC State wrestling team will be in action in the UWW Junior Nationals division: rising R-So. Zurich Storm (57 kg) and a pair of true freshmen that saw action this past season for NC State in Tyrie Houghton (92 kg) and Deonte Wilson (125 kg).
Â
Four Wolfpack freshmen that redshirted this past college season will also be in action: Jacob Camacho (57 kg), Jarrett Trombley (61 kg), Tyler Barnes (74 kg), and Trent Hidlay (86 kg). Each was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school, and the four combined to go 74-12 during their redshirt seasons in 2018-19 while competing in open tournaments.
Â
Four incoming freshmen for the 2019-20 Wolfpack squad are also registered for the UWW Juniors, but not under the Wolfpack Wrestling Club umbrella: Kai Orine (57 kg), Mike Madara (61 kg), Hunter Lewis (65 kg), and Owen Trephan (97 kg). Lewis will also compete in GRECO at 63 kg, he is the #2 seed.
Â
A pair with NC State connections already punched their tickets to the World Team Trials, and will not be in action in Las Vegas. Both Sean Fausz (61kg) and Hayden Hidlay (70kg) traveled to Romania and competed at the U23 World Championships in November, and both received a bid to the World Team Trails for making the U23 World Team.
Â
Former NC State national champion Nick Gwiazdowski (125 kg) has already qualified for Final X, and does not have to wrestle in either the U.S. Open or the World Team Trails. For the second straight summer, Gwiazdowski earned a bronze medal at the World Championships last October in Hungary, and has already advanced to Final X to be held in June.
Â
Nick Reenan advanced to the Final X last year, but will miss freestyle action this summer after undergoing surgery after the NCAA Championships.
Â
Additionally, former Wolfpack wrestler Mike Kosoy also has already qualified for the World Team Trials at 125 kg, as he was the 2019 Dave Schultz highest placer. Kosoy currently trains at Arizona State.
Â
In the U.S. Senior Men's Freestyle rankings, Gwiazdowski is No. 1, Reenan No. 2, and Fausz and Hidlay are both No. 6 in their weight classes.
