RALEIGH, N.C.– The No. 21 NC State men's tennis team will play the first of four ACC road matches in a row on Wednesday afternoon as it visits 11th-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill. First serve is set for 4 p.m. from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, and admission to the match is free.
LAST TIME OUT:
NC State extended its winning streak to three matches and picked up its first win over Florida State since 2013 as it defeated the No. 26 Seminoles, 4-1, on Friday. The win improved the Pack to 14-7 (5-2 ACC), marking the best start to ACC action since the 2013 season, when the squad also picked up five wins in its first seven conference matches.
The Pack won a competitive doubles point and then picked up three singles wins to seal its second win over a ranked ACC opponent in a row. The victory was only the fourth time in program history that the Wolfpack has defeated the Seminoles.
PACK IN THE POLLS:
The Wolfpack continued to make its rise in the top 25 of the national team rankings as it was tabbed No. 21 in the latest Oracle/ITA poll. The rankings come with the team having won four of its last five ACC matches, including its last two ranked matchups. The No. 21 designation ties as the Pack's highest ranking of the season.
Junior Alexis Galarneau earned a No. 22 ranking to remain in the top 25 of the singles standings for the third poll in a row. Galarneau and Michael Ogden jumped up 10 spots in the doubles rankings to check in at No. 47 in the nation.
STREAK TRACKER:
Yannai Barkai has once again put together a team-leading three-match winning streak in singles action. The Wolfpack freshman has won his last three completed singles matches, including solid straight-sets wins against Rrezart Cungu from No. 2 Wake Forest and Richard Thongoana from No. 26 Florida State.
Seniors Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic have won their last five doubles matches on the way to compiling a 5-1 record in conference doubles contests.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS:
UNC-CH is 13-4 on the season with a 5-2 mark in conference play heading into Wednesday's midweek match. The Tar Heels have not lost at home this season as they have compiled a perfect 8-0 record when playing on their home courts. The squad has been ranked in the top-11 for the entirety of the 2019 dual season and come into the match against the Pack with a No. 11 national ranking.
Three Tar Heels are ranked in singles, led by junior William Blumberg who checks in at No. 29. Benjamin Sigouin (No. 35) and Josh Peck (No. 104) are also featured in the national poll.
Blumberg pairs up with Blaine Boyden to make up the nation's 34th-ranked doubles pair, and Boyden is also ranked No. 61 in the nation in doubles with Anu Kodali.
UP NEXT:
NC State continues road action with a full weekend of ACC competition as it travels to take on Georgia Tech on Friday, April 5 and visits Clemson on Sunday, April 7.
