NC State Defeats Georgia Tech for the First Time Since 1998
The Pack moves to 22-5 (11-3) and the Yellow Jackets drop to 12-11 (7-7) to close regular season play. NC State improves its 4-3 decisions record (4-2), and tallies its 10th ranked win in its 2019 campaign.
Four members of the team reached 10+ conference singles wins this season (Bianca Moldovan, Adriana Reami, Amanda Rebol, Alana Smith), as Reami and Smith picked up their 10th singles wins on Sunday.
The Pack's doubles lineup took the first seven games of the match, coming out hot to propel the squad to the doubles point. Ninth-ranked duo Anna Rogers and Alana Smith defeated Gia Cohen and Nami Otsuka 6-3 on court one to record their 10th conference doubles win. Adriana Reami and Claudia Wiktorin followed up the court one win with a court two victory of their own, defeating Kenya Jones and Valeriya Demonova 6-2.
Bianca Moldovan and Liz Norman rounded out the doubles victories for NC State, earning the team its third three-match sweep in doubles on the season.
In singles, the squad got off to a slow start, taking just two of six first sets. No. 93 Smith took one of the Pack's two first-set victories and was the first on the team to earn a singles point, winning in straight sets against Otsuka. The win marked the freshman's 10th singles conference win.
Moldovan also won in straight sets to square the match, 3-3, as the match point stood up for grabs on court three.
No. 110 Reami traded games in the third set with Deminova as the set was tied at 4-4, but Reami prevailed with a 7-5 victory for her 10th conference singles win to clinch the match on court three.
Straight from the Pack: Head Coach Simon Earnshaw
"I'm really proud of the team today. We've fought the whole season, and obviously this has been a huge step forward for the program. Sometimes when you're making those strides, they can come at a cost, whether that's physically or mentally. I think we've definitely been feeling that down the homestretch.
"Doubles was actually pretty solid today. We jumped out and had good energy early. In singles, we just seemed to lose our way a little bit initially, but credit goes to Bianca and Alana. They steadied the ship and were able to close their matches out pretty comfortably.
"It came down to a deciding match. We've had a few of those recently, and Adriana was definitely struggling a little bit. I wouldn't say she was 100%, but not many people tend to be at this point. I think the key was just hanging around long enough until we got our chance. We did get that chance at 5-4, but unfortunately we weren't able to take it. She responded with a great service game to bring it to five all.
"Someone had to win, and obviously we were on the other side of it against Florida State, but today we were able to close it out on the road, which has kind of been a theme for us this season.
"It's the first time we've beat Georgia Tech in a long, long time— probably before most of our players were born. Now it's time to move on to postseason play."
