Rogers Clinches Match with 11th Ranked Victory of Season
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The No. 12 NC State women's tennis team cruised past Baylor, 4-0, at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge for its fifth consecutive victory. Rattling off four straight points, the Pack was quick to win on Friday night.
NC State improves to 15-3 on the season, and Baylor drops to 5-13.
No. 28 Anna Rogers picked up her 11th ranked singles win of the season as she clinched the match.
NC State got in a rhythm early in doubles, as No. 12 Rogers and Smith and Claudia Wiktorin and Adriana Reami jumped out to early 3-0 leads on courts one and three respectively. The first to finish, Wiktorin and Reami dominated Stephanie Adames and Katelyn Parker with a 6-0 victory.
No. 12 Rogers and Smith would finish quickly after, defeating Jessica Hinajose and Paula Barañano 6-1 to capture the doubles point.
For the third match in a row, Amanda Rebol earned a point for the Pack in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Bianca Moldovan would extend her singles win streak to double digits (10) with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Adames with courts one, two, three, and four still playing to clinch the match point with NC State leading, 3-0.
On court one, No. 28 Rogers clinched the match over No. 59 Livia Kraus. The Stamford, Conn., native has won has won eight of her last 10 singles matches, including three against ranked opponents.
Straight from the Pack: Head Coach Simon Earnshaw
"First off, I want to say we are all very thankful for the opportunity to participate in this great event. We are all very fortunate to have Oracle's support for college tennis and tennis in general. This was a tremendous experience for all of the players and staff, and one that will have immeasurable impact moving forward. The speaker alone at Thursday night's tournament dinner will have a very profound impact on everyone in attendance.
"Coming into the match, my main concern was that we haven't played an outdoor match in a while. Overall, I thought we adapted well in doubles and stuck to what we do well. In singles it's always a lot more difficult to make the transition. You could see in spots that physically and mentally we needed to pay attention to some details and keep the focus on building points, rather than trying to win with just one shot. Baylor certainly didn't make it easy for us and kept the fight up in situations where we maybe could have closed it out sooner, but we hung in there and eventually found a way through. It was awesome to see Anna get another ranked win in clinching the match!
"We've got a long travel day tomorrow, and then we need to get back to work next week to prepare for two more home ACC matches versus Miami and Virginia Tech. Go Pack!!"
