RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 27 NC State men's tennis team battled but narrowly fell to third-ranked Virginia, 4-2, Friday evening inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
With the loss, NC State falls to 10-6 (1-1 ACC) and the Cavaliers improve to 12-2 (3-1 ACC).
"The guys played a very good doubles point today," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "It was great to see us executing what we've been practicing and emphasizing. It was a great crowd out here today. The guys fought like I knew they would. We had great performances all the way through. It's a tough loss. Virginia is a very good team, and we just need to have a great practice tomorrow and great ready for a very tough Louisville team."
Matching up against a top-three opponent for the second match in a row, NC State used a strong doubles point to take an early advantage in the match, but the Cavaliers picked up wins on four singles courts to earn their fourth straight win.
Playing in front of an electric home crowd, the Pack made an opening statement by claiming the doubles point over the Cavaliers.
Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic picked up an early break to go up 3-1 and went on to hand Aswin Lizen and Gianni Ross just their second loss of the season as the Wolfpack duo cruised to the 6-3 victory.
Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden also took advantage of an early break that would go on to be the difference in their 6-4 win over Carl Soderlund and William Woodall.
The Cavaliers tied the match score at one apiece as 50th-ranked Nakashima picked up a three-set win over Igor. The two split sets and pushed the third set into a tiebreaker, but Nakashima went on to secure the 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (1) win.
Galarneau remained true to the strong singles form that he has displayed all season as he picked up his second top-15 win and sixth ranked win of the season. His 7-6 (8), 6-2 victory over No. 15 Soderlund tied as the highest ranked win of his career.
The Pack held a 2-1 lead as two more courts found themselves in the midst of third sets. The score was evened once again as Virginia's 96th-ranked Gianni Ross defeated Yannai Barkai 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Virginia took its first lead of the match as Henrik Wiersholm picked up a win over Babelis on court three. Babelis fought off an early deficit to win the first set, but Wiersholm fired off two sets in a row to take the 6-7 (8), 6-2, 6-4 victory that put the Cavaliers a match away from the clinch.
Matthew Lord picked up the deciding match for the Cavaliers on court six as he beat Georgiy Malyshev 6-3, 6-2.
