GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman pitcher Sydney Nester of the NC State softball team picked up a pair of weekly awards on Tuesday thanks to her solid week that featured 40 strikeouts and a 0.00 earned-run average in the circle. She was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week and College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week.
The awards are the first in her career, and she is the first NC State pitcher to win a weekly award from the ACC since Emily Weiman on April 27, 2015. Nester is the second pitcher to earn a weekly award from College Sports Madness in as many weeks.
The Hillsville, Va., native made three starts and a total of four appearances in the circle and did not allow an earned run in her 23 innings pitched. She went the distance twice and collected a total of three shutouts, holding opponents to a .105 batting average.
On Tuesday she struck out eight in her four innings of relief work against Valparaiso at home. On Friday she fanned a career-best 12 in the Pack's 3-0 win versus Marist in the Charleston Invitational, then bested her career high with 15 in her first collegiate no-hitter against College of Charleston (a 2-0 win) on Saturday.
Her 15 strikeouts against the Cougars were the most for a Pack player in a single game since Emily Weiman's 18 vs. Lipscomb on March 13, 2015, and she was the first player to toss a no-hitter since Devin Wallace on Feb. 23, 2018.
Nester completed her strong week with fanning five on Sunday versus Youngstown State in five complete innings.
