
Softball Defeats Kansas, 4-1

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (8-6) opened play in the NC State Invitational on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Kansas (3-11) at Dail Stadium, extending its win streak to five.
 
The Jayhawks struck early, plating a run in its first three at-bats, but the Wolfpack proceeded to score four unanswered runs en route to its eighth win of the season.
 
Due to heavy rain and unplayable field conditions, the contest was called in the top of the seventh. Since the inning was not completed when the game was called, the score reverted back to the sixth.
 
Of Note
-In its last five games, the Pack has limited its opponents to two or less runs.
-Natalie Jones and Jessica Moore belted one home run each in the contest, giving the team 21 on the season. For Jones it was her third of the year, and for Moore it was her second of the season.
-Devin Wallace (3-3) threw her third complete game of the season, allowing five hits and no walks in the win. She additionally fanned a season-high seven batters.
-Logan Morris, Brigette Nordberg, Skylar Johnston and Sam Russ all extended their reached base safely streaks. Morris now owns an eight-game streak, Nordberg has a seven-game streak and Johnston and Russ extended theirs to six.
 
How It Happened
-It only took Kansas three at-bats to plate a run in the first inning. Sydnee Ramsey led off with a double to left center, and she scored on Shelby Gayre's one-out double to right field.
-The Wolfpack proceeded to put up a combined four unanswered runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
-Johnston drew a two-out walk and Moore went yard to right field, breaking up the no-hitter Kansas pitcher Lexy Mills had going to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead in the third.
-In the fifth, Johnston's RBI single to right field plated Nordberg after she led off the frame with a base hit to right fled.
-Jones then led off the sixth with a home run to left field, giving the Red and White the three-run advantage.
-The Jayhawks managed to rally in the seventh with four runs on three hits and an error, but since the inning was not completed when the game was called the score reverted back to the sixth.

NC State will continue play in the NC State Invitational Saturday when it faces Campbell at 4 and Charleston Southern at 6:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
