RALEIGH, N.C. – For the fourth consecutive year, the NC State volleyball program is sending student-athletes to the U.S. Women's National Team Tryouts held in Colorado Springs, Colo. Rising junior Melissa Evans and rising senior Lauryn Terry will represent the Wolfpack at the event.
Â
The tryouts will take place this weekend March 1-3 inside the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The Wolfpack's duo will be joined by 216 athletes from around the world, as a total of 218 athletes will compete for spots on the teams.
Â
U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly will direct the entire tryout process.
Â
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT, while Saturday's sessions are at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The final session on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff to participate in a "USA" training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 10:30 a.m. MT.
Â
Evans tallied 349 kills last season, the second most on the team to garner All-ACC honors. The rising junior opposite hitter averaged 3.17 kills per set, recording double-digit kills in nearly every match.
Â
She charted a season-high 20 kills in the Wolfpack's season-opening win against VCU, the 2017 Atlantic 10 Champions. Evans put down 18 kills in NC State's 3-0 victory versus Wright State, which was the most by any player in the ACC in a three-set match at the time and ended the year as the fifth most.
Â
Evans also finished the season with the second-most aces on the squad with 18, highlighted by a season-high three on two occasions during the year. The Lone Tree, Colo., native logged 191 digs and notched double figures six times to tally five double-doubles.
Â
Terry started 26 matches this past season and led the Wolfpack with 96 blocks. She was also a force offensively, as she put down 173 kills, the fourth most on the team.
Â
Hailing from Columbia, Md., her .310 attacking percentage was the best on the squad among the hitters as she committed just 48 errors on 403 total attempts. Terry had her best performance of the year in a five-set win for NC State against Arkansas State, as she tallied 10 kills on 15 attacks with only one error to record a .600 attacking percentage.
